For the contemplation…of three elections.
There is man’s election. Of this we are keenly aware. US national elections are this week Tuesday. Tens of millions have already voted. Everyone is calling this election “historic.” Our country will either have some hope, some say, of returning to good old capitalism, a lawful, orderly society, and of promoting traditional values according to divine norms. Or it will continue down the slippery, treacherous, and lecherous hill to socialism, lawlessness, and the promotion of values of sinners who call good evil and evil good along society norms. And there will be either freedom—of speech, of religion, and choices among choices morally acceptable, choices that are between good or better or best. Or there will more government coercion and selfish choices between me, myself, and I, ridiculous choices among theys and thems who are not I’s, murderous choices about whether a baby in the womb lives or dies, and perverted choices of men who choose to become a female and change in the woman’s locker room and then compete to throw down 869 points per game against the weaker sex.
All depending on who is elected, especially which candidate for the presidency is elected. We wait to see the outcome. Will an adulteress, murderous socialist laughing feminist win? Or will a loud, foul-mouthed, proud, adulterous man-pleaser win?

It is a good thing that we are not left on tenterhooks regarding the fate of America or pondering how one unrighteous candidate or another will truly spell the difference between a righteous, moral, and prosperous nation and an unrighteous, immoral, and shameful nation.
It is a good thing, in fact that we believers know something pre-historic. We know that before the foundation of the worlds, before all time, God had already chosen who would be the next president of the United States. And this “election” of our next president, by God himself, was not on the basis of who would be more righteous, but according to God’s own sovereign good pleasure to use all things and employ all sorts of people and events for his own glory, to reveal his superior wisdom, righteousness, and love, and to save his people, his church, to be the one nation under God, the light of the world (I Peter 2:9). To apply the language of a prophet to this election, this foreordination of the next president of America:
All the inhabitants of the earth, including the citizens (and illegal aliens?!) in America, and democrats, republicans, pollsters, and candidates are reputed as nothing; He does according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain his hand or say to him “What have you done?” or blame him for rigging the election. (Daniel 4: 35)

Then there is this election: God’s election of us, in all eternity, in love in Christ Jesus to be saved by him and to enjoy and praise him forever. According to this election and then through the death and resurrection of Jesus and the faith and Spirit given to us for his sake we are blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:3, 4). We are blessed, therefore, as God’s elect, whether we live in a capitalist or Marxist society, or whether creeps or crooks or tyrants or all three kinds at once have the rule in our nation. On neither us nor others does blessing depend! And from this blessing, because nothing shall ever separate us from the electing, saving love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8: 28-39), we shall never be separated. And by this election, this eternal loving counsel of our God, we are being guided, every day, midst all the elections and machinations and shenanigans of men and women and devils and nations, in order afterward to be received to glory (Psalm 73: 24). No one can steal this election.

Three elections then: man’s among men and nations; God’s sovereign appointment of presidents; God’s of us in love.
Regarding the first: vote as you are led, biblically, and principally.
Regarding the second: remember the King of kings, the President of presidents, the Prime Minister of prime ministers. He is doing his will among all nations always. And his will and his reign are good, wise, holy. Do not fret, dearly beloved. Rest in the King’s will.
Regarding the third contemplate, delight in, and be supremely comforted in God’s election of you. Such unconditional love is electing love: a love God had of you before the worlds were made, before you were born, and before you had done any good or evil.Such love in Christ, the One chosen to be the faithful Mediator of your election, sent to seal in his atoning blood shed for you the blessed outcome of your salvation and eternal life in heaven, regardless of the future of a nation, the economy, our political liberties, or if our candidate wins. Love God’s election of you; his Christ for you; his love of you. And respond with a life of holy thanks.
So in light of three elections let there be among us, evident to all, these three things:
Peace.
Piety.
Praise.
This Tuesday at the polls.
And Wednesday and the next day and the next wherever you are by grace at.
